Schaefer Looking to Get 1.7 to 1.8 Million PPV Buys from Mayweather-Ortiz Highly Unlikely

Funny thing about promoters is that they would normally overdo their math just to tell people that their client is interesting. This is simply what Richard Schaefer has done before the rather disappointing fight between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz that ended up in the most bizarre way possible.

Schaefer, head promoter of Golden Boy Promotions and the fight, claimed that they were expecting to get 1.7 to 1.8 million PPV buys for the fight. However, if the gate sales are any indication, they may be getting a lot lower than what Schaefer is expecting to get after the fight.

It was reported that even with a powerhouse lineup, with Erik Morales and Saul Canelo Alvarez in the undercard, the event failed to draw people into buying tickets and was not able to sell the place out. There were certainly empty seats for the said event, even though the price of the ticket was lowered down a week before the fight. Continue reading

Donaire Stays Under Top Rank

Bob Arum is definitely a happy panda now that Bantamweight world champion Nonito Donaire has come back to his house, Top Rank, to do business. It should be remembered that Donaire tried to jump ship to Golden Boy Promotions a few months ago, but had to face downtime due to his existing contractual obligations with Top Rank.

After lots of discussions between the three entities (Donaire, Top Rank, and Golden Boy), and a retired judge to serve as arbitrator, it was clear that Top Rank owns Donaire’s contract and Arum waited for his “prodigal son” to come back to the stable. It was reported that Donaire signed a very healthy four-year deal as Cameron Dunkin, Donaire’s manager, disclosed.

Dunkin confirmed that The Filipino Flash will not go anywhere for the next 4 years.

In a news release issued by Top Rank, Donaire had the following to say: Continue reading

Schaefer: $65 million Carlos Slim Offer, Not True

It appears that the previously reported $65 million offer by Carlos Slim to the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is false as Richard Schaefer, CEO ofGolden Boy Promotions, denied such deal.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is currently fighting under Golden Boy and Schaefer claims that there were no such talks between Carlos Slim and Manny Pacquiao as he states that he did not get any word for a possible fight from the billionaire and said he is close to the Slim people and even have direct contacts with Carlos Slim himself. Donaire Wants to Fight, but Which Promotion?

Nonito Donaire, current WBC and WBO Bantamweight world champion, has been itching for his next fight, but situations cannot be any good for him right now due to contractual catastrophe that is stopping him for signing any fights.

Donaire signed a four-year contract with Golden Boy Promotions last March 16 of this year where he was guaranteed a $1 million purse for his first year with the group. This was after Donaire claiming that a breach of contract has been made with Top Rank, making his contractual obligations with them null and void, and automatically makes him a free agent.

The World Bantamweight champion stated that Top Rank failed to do their part of the bargain Continue reading
